چکیده

The confluence of untyped λ-calculus with unconditional rewriting is now well understood. In this paper, we investigate the confluence of λ-calculus with conditional rewriting and provide general results in two directions. First, when conditional rules are algebraic. This extends results of Müller and Dougherty for unconditional rewriting. Two cases are considered, whether betareduction is allowed or not in the evaluation of conditions. Moreover, Dougherty’s result is improved from the assumption of strongly normalizing β-reduction to weakly normalizing β-reduction. We also provide examples showing that outside these conditions, modularity of confluence is difficult to achieve. Second, we go beyond the algebraic framework and get new confluence results using a restricted notion of orthogonality that takes advantage of the conditional part of rewrite rules.

Labeling techniques and typed fixed-point operators

Labeling techniques for untyped lambda calculus were developed by Lévy, Hyland, Wadsworth and others in the 1970’s. A typical application is the proof of confluence from finiteness of developments: by labeling each subterm with a natural number indicating the maximum number of times this term may participate in a reduction step, we obtain a strongly-normalizing approximation of β, η -reduction....

Full Abstraction for a Recursively Typed Lambda Calculus with Parallel Conditional

We define the syntax and reduction relation of a recursively typed lambda calculus with a parallel case-function (a parallel conditional). The reduction is shown to be confluent. We interpret the recursive types as information systems in a restricted form, which we call prime systems. A denotational semantics is defined with this interpretation. We define the syntactical normal form approximati...

Confluence of Pattern-Based Calculi

Different pattern calculi integrate the functional mechanisms from the λ-calculus and the matching capabilities from rewriting. Several approaches are used to obtain the confluence but in practice the proof methods share the same structure and each variation on the way patternabstractions are applied needs another proof of confluence. We propose here a generic confluence proof where the way pat...

Combining Algebraic Rewriting, Extensional Lambda Calculi, and Fixpoints

It is well known that confluence and strong normalization are preserved when combining algebraic rewriting systems with the simply typed lambda calculus. It is equally well known that confluence fails when adding either the usual contraction rule for η, or recursion together with the usual contraction rule for surjective pairing. We show that confluence and strong normalization are modular prop...
